THE DOG ATE MY HOMEWORK

(OR WHY YOU STILL DON’T HAVE A BUSINESS BLOG.)

This blog originally appeared in WeGenerateContent.com a partner company of Copydesk.ie

Excuses are pretty handy things, aren’t they?

Especially when you’ve been caught rapid doing something you shouldn’t have.

Or more likely, not doing something you should have.

As the word suggests, an excuse ‘excuses’ you – if only temporarily – from blame or responsibility for a certain (awkward) situation in which you find yourself.

Sure, an excuse gets you off the hook. And buys you time.

But, sooner or later, you have to face up to the fact that the piper needs to be paid.

(Even the kid whose dog ‘ate’ their homework undoubtedly had to complete it the very next night.)

Now, let’s move on to another example: business blogging.

A LOAD OF COBBLERS

We’re not bragging, mind you.

(Far from it, as you’ll soon discover.)

But we think we may just have established a new world record.

No, we didn’t climb the highest mountain.

Or eat the most blueberry pies at the church fete.

We didn’t even create the biggest rubber band ball.

(Though, come to think of it, we wish we had.)

No, unfortunately our claim to fame is more of a claim to shame.

You see, we have finally finished our website.

(Nothing to be ashamed of there, we hear you say.)

No, indeed. We’re thrilled with it.

But here’s the rub.

According to our email trail, it took us exactly (I still can’t believe this next bit) 800 days from start to finish.

Yes, you read that right. 800 days!

DEEPLY DIPPY ABOUT DIVING

Deep Sea Diving imageI have always loved water.

(Although, it must be said, never in my whiskey.)

I still remember my mother telling me I was the only child she knew of who actually looked forward to bath time.

Then, in my early teens, I discovered scuba diving.

Not in the water, as you might think, but on television.

Every week, as regular as clockwork, I would be glued to our old black and white set as former navy frogman, Mike Nelson (played by Lloyd Bridges), took viewers on another colourful underwater adventure.

Diving quickly became something I really wanted to do.

There was just one slight problem.

Living in Oakville, Ontario, the ocean was a fair distance away.

(Or, should I say oceans. The Atlantic was, and still is as far as I know, roughly 1300 miles away. While the Pacific is over 3000 miles distant.)

True, we did have Lake Ontario on our doorstep.
